Exotic animal legislation for Ohio passed by Senate
Things are getting heated in Columbus, Ohio, where the Senate has passed Senate Bill 310, the exotic animal legislation. The exotic animal bill prohibits new ownership, but allows current owners to keep their exotic animals – with limitations.
“Please understand the best thing we can do is pass some form of law, we need to keep it out of private people’s homes,” said one legislator last week at the hearing. ”We don’t need any more cougars, we don’t need any more tigers in the state of Ohio. … What’s the best thing to do for these people … and what’s the best for the animals?”
This legislation comes after the Zanesville animal massacre, when 56 exotic animals escaped this past October. In all, 49 of the escapees, including tigers, lions and bears, were slaughtered. Even though schools closed, the town of Zanesville was in danger and animal lives were lost, many in Ohio oppose the bill.
The Senate passed the bill on a 30-1 vote and it will now be taken to the House.
